"Dr. Dealer" WOW

Today I had one of the most interesting conversations ever at work.  I was talking with my co-worker about one of the guys who works with us. He doesn't work on the T-mobile program, but he works at the call center I work at and used to be the site director. He is a dentist with an Ivy-league education, but he was also a cocaine dealer who ran one of the largest drug rings on the east coast.  This turned out to be an amazing story. Picture your nice-guy, low-key dentist having a dual life where he's also the biggest cocaine drug dealer on the east coast. It's almost impossible to imagine, but that's what happened here in this case against Larry Lavin.

What's also amazing is that he got his drug-dealing start along with a bunch of other dentists-to-be at the prestigious University Of Pennsylvania where those med students were pocketing a lot of money while they learned how to drill teeth. This was around 1981, It's a sad comment that our bright med students at an Ivy School were doing this. Later, when Lavin went really big-time - we're talking millions of dollar in cocaine sales each month in the '90s  and 60 million in annual sales- many of his clients were executives.

I was told he was actually pretty smart about it and did it for quite a while. Eventually he got caught and spent 19 years in prison. After which he came to work for my company. This is where he has been since then. He is a really nice guy. There are a couple of books about him.  They are   "Dr. Dealer"  and  "Dr Snow" They also did a biography type thing on A & E City confidential called " Philadelphia - Double Dutch Bust.

I had heard that he had a book written about him, but I had no idea that was what the book was written about. The funniest thing is that people at work will ask him to sign their book. How funny is that. Now I want to read the book. I would actually like to sit down and just talk with him, ask some questions. He is a really nice guy. A goofy one too. I can't wait to read the book, especially because I know the guy.
